A few weeks ago the generous people at iWorldAustralia sent me an iPod Touch gadget to review. This time it was the Novothink Surge Solar Charger Case for iPod Touch. I was slightly disappointed it wasn’t the iPhone version but thankfully a friend in the office loaned me his iTouch to try it out with (I did try to jam my iPhone in but it was too thick for the case!).

As the name suggests, the Novothink Surge Solar Charger Case utilises the power of sun to keep your iPod Touch juiced up!

Yes, a solar panel forms most of the back of the case – don’t worry its covered by thick transparent plastic which will protect it from accidental breakage. This solar panel churns out 5.5V at 100mAh in full sun which means more than enough power for your iTouch.

Other things I liked about the Novothink Surge Solar Charger Case for iPod Touch, were the battery charge indicators and the fact that it doesn’t add a ridiculous amount of bulk given its solar charging capabilities built in. I can’t forget to mention the grippy material the rest of the exterior is made of which means that it won’t slip out of your hand too easily.

This case is perfect for those who tend to spend a lot of time outdoors and preferably in a country / city where sun rays are in abundance – not recommended for people to be indoors for most of their days. Cave-dwellers, sorry

Features of the Novothink Surge Solar Charger Case for iPod Touch:
Solar Panel

    * State-of-the-art solar panel allows continuous charging from the sun
* Custom designed and engineered solar panels outputs 5.5V at 100 mAh in full sun

Battery

    * Integrated rechargeable 1500 mAh 3.7 V lithium-ion polymer battery offers 120% capacity of iPod touch
* Advanced lithium-ion polymer battery cell technology prevents overcharging and provides protection from extreme temperature

USB

    * Custom engineered USB 2.0 cable provides high capacity charging and data exchange
* Powerup and sync with iTunes without removing iPod touch from case with the provided USB cable
* Compatible with standard USB charging ports

General

    * Optimized power management system provides continuous charge to iPod touch’s internal battery
* Durable, lightweight hard-shell construction with soft-touch grip side sections
* Integrated 4 LED battery status indicator
* Built-in Apple certified 30 pin connector
* Compatibility: iPod touch second generation – 8GB, 16GB, 32GB & 64GB
* Model No: NT02

Giveaway Details for iPod Touch Novothink Surge Solar Power Case:

We have one unit to give away. To be in a chance to win this, simply leave a comment below about how this case will enhance your iPod Touch experience in general. Submit your comment by this Friday 4th of December and the best comment will be announced on Saturday 5th of December, 2009. Very easy! Tell your friends and family to enter too!

For a company that was more a specialist in photo copiers, Ricoh is making huge strides in the digital camera market. Their newest premium compact digital camera offering, the Ricoh GR Digital III is proof of this. I’ve been reviewing / playing with one for the last 2 weeks and this is yet another camera that I will be sad to part with.

If you’d like us to giveaway cameras like this on the site, leave a comment to Ricoh below!

Quick Easy Shots

For a digital compact, this has got to be one of the fastest shooting cameras I’ve seen. Its new F1.9, f-6.0 lens is the main reason for this. This translates to better indoor / lowlight condition shots. Could this be why there is a hardware release for the flash? Are they’re trying to get more newbies to experience non-flash indoor shots? The quick response means that your more likely to get a good shot as compared to slower cameras.

Very Light

When I pulled it out of the box, I was surprised to find how light it was especially for a camera that is supposed to be in Ricoh’s premium range. Generally the rule with cameras is, the heavier the better, however the light weight of this camera is a handy attribute if you’re looking for something to take with you everywhere. If you’re looking for an above average camera to take with you on your travels, this must be in your must-see and test list. It’s half the weight of my Canon G10 and a quarter of the weight of my Canon 5D Mark II!

Rugged Construction

Another reason why this would make a great travel camera is that it has a solid metallic casing featuring rubberized grip. You can be confident when hiking up mountain tops, taking aerials of cities or bumping around in tour groups that this camera will be able to tough it out and allow you to take your travel pics.

Huge Hi-Resolution LCD Screen

Ricohs are famous for their generous LCD screens and the Ricoh GR Digital III is no different. The GR Digital III has been touted to have the first 920,000 dots 3″ VGA panel on a digital compact camera. This will do wonders when reviewing your photos or recording video on the camera. We all know how we love to share a photo when taking a great shot so perfect for when many heads are peering over your shoulder.

Summary of the Ricoh GR Digital III

It’s tough, got fast optics, huge LCD screen and is light – the Ricoh GR Digital III is the perfect handbag / travel camera.

Highly recommended. Well done Ricoh!

Main features of the RICOH GR DIGITAL III

Newly developed large-aperture lens

    * The adoption of the new F1.9, f-6.0 mm (equivalent to 28 mm for 35 mm film cameras) lens for the GR DIGITAL III takes compact-body cameras into a new realm of images. This lens makes it possible to shoot with a faster shutter speed than could be used on previous models, or to shoot with the same shutter speed but at a lower setting for ISO sensitivity.
* Despite the large F1.9 aperture, the new lens achieves a resolution level equivalent to that of the F2.4 GR Lens.
* The use of a newly developed lens drive system has made it possible to achieve greater image quality in macro photography.

Taking the GR DIGITAL concepts another step forward, the GR DIGITAL III achieves even greater image quality.

    * The new image processing engine GR Engine III is installed. Using newly developed noise reduction technology, it enables highly sophisticated noise processing to be done while maintaining superior resolution, tone characteristics, and saturation.
* The new high-sensitivity CCD (1/1.7 inch, approx. 10 megapixels) achieves high-sensitivity properties through the use of a new process. The combination of the newly developed GR Lens and GR Engine III significantly increases shooting performance in low-light scenes.
* Even faster shooting capabilities for capturing fleeting shutter opportunities.
* Algorithm improvements have reduced focusing time in low-light scenes. With the Pre-AF function, focusing speed is further accelerated by adjusting the focus to match the movement of the subject.
* The new “full-press snap” function shoots at a preset distance for a one-push full-press of the shutter button.
* Up to five RAW images can be recorded in consecutive shooting* and bracketing.

Enhanced expression capabilities make good use of GR Lens performance.

    * Shutter speed priority AE is now available in addition to aperture priority AE.
* A more extensive range of image settings enables the photographer to control hue and saturation. This makes it easy to create images with a wide variety of coloration.
* When photographing subjects with mixed color temperatures, the multi-pattern auto white balance function makes it possible to achieve optimum colour reproduction.

Large, high-visibility 3.0-inch VGA LCD monitor.

    * The 3.0-inch, 920,000-dot VGA LCD monitor provides high resolution, a wide viewing angle, excellent colour reproduction, good visibility outdoors, and a surface that resists soiling. The sRGB comparison for colour reproduction range is 100%.
* The micro-thumbnail display function displays 81 thumbnail images on a single screen.

Operability further enhanced.

    * The My Settings on the mode dial have been expanded to three sets. The number of Fn (function) buttons on the back of the camera body has been expanded to two.
* A function has been added for assigning names to My Settings sets and storing and retrieving them. A maximum of six sets can be defined and stored.

Expandability further enhanced with addition of new options.

    * The 21 mm wide conversion lens GW-2 and hood and adapter GH-2 will be sold.
* The available soft cases are the GC-3 for the body only and the GC-4 quick-shooting case type compatible with the GV-2 viewfinder.
* There are also plans to introduce the GF-1 external flash, which can handle TTL flash using auxiliary flash, in the autumn of 2009.

Function to be expanded using firmware.

    * Even after the GR DIGITAL III is introduced, we will continue to add new functions through the release of new firmware. By updating their firmware, GR DIGITAL III owners can continue to utilize the latest functions.

The Pitch: The Fujitsu LifeBook UH900 multitouch mini-notebook falls somewhere between a netbook and a smartphone: About the size of a checkbook (but thicker), the UH900 weighs in at just 1.1 pounds. Still, you get a multitouch-enabled, 5.6-inch screen, two-finger touch shortcuts (as with the iPhone), integrated GPS, webcam, and a solid state drive. Of course, you also get an Intel processor technology, plus Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. If you think netbooks are just tooooo big and cumbersome, this elfin mininote is for you.

Pro: Usually, the smallest PCs are also the weakest. This Fujitsu seems to be strong enough to stand its ground against netbook competitors.

Con: Mini has been done, miultitouch is all around. Nothing new to see here.

Recommendation: This product simply lacks the uniqueness take it any farther in the competition.

You may have noticed recently that some votes have disappeared from the Last Gadget Standing Ballot Box results page. Well your eyes are not deceiving you, some votes have been removed, due to the fact that there were apparently some voting shenanigans going on.

So we called in former President Jimmy Carter to monitor the election. Not really; we had our software engineers take a look, and it turned out that multiple votes were coming from the same few computers. They took the time to validate each vote and eliminate invalid votes, and those are the totals you see on the page today.

When we said vote early and often, we meant up to your allotted 25 votes. We are running on an honor system here: It is possible to vote more than once, but we are trusting our readers not to game the system and stuff the ballot box — no matter how much you may love it.

We are trying to keep it fair here, and we are asking you to do the same. If you haven’t voted yet, VOTE NOW! If you have, please check out the results of the online poll. Remember, voting ends at the stroke of midnight on Friday night.

The Pitch: The first Android 2.0 device to market and one of the most eye-catching, the Motorola DROID pairs a huge 3.7-inch display with a hardware keyboard and promises iPhone-besting functionality. Verizon Wireless’ EVDO Rev.A network keeps things connected, while Google Maps Navigation delivers turn-by-turn directions at no extra charge. Factor in a 5-megapixel camera, speedy ARM Cortex A8 processor and access to the Android Market, and you’re looking at arguably the flagship Android device of the year.

Pro: The 854×480 capacitive touchscreen is bright, crisp, and color saturated; audio quality is loud and clear; and the build quality is strong. Despite heavy use of wireless — WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS as well as the 3G — you’ll see a full day’s use from a single charge. The Android Market is growing broader in its offerings all the time.

Con: For all the hype about a hardware keyboard, the DROID’s QWERTY lacks tactile feedback, and there are some frustrating software glitches (that should be addressed with a firmware update soon). Even at version 2.0, Android still lacks the user-friendliness of the iPhone 3GS, and the app variety remains an order of magnitude behind what you’ll find on Apple’s smartphone.

Recommendation: Android remains the platform for those who unwilling to live with out-of-the-box functionality, and the Motorola DROID is currently one of the fastest — and arguably the slickest — of the breed. With Android 2.0, Google has raised its game, and Motorola has obviously invested heavily in matching that with the DROID’s hardware. It’s not quite so instantly accessible as an iPhone, but for embracing the world of open-source in such style, the Motorola DROID appears to have a bright future.
